Empowering Stateless Children: Infrastructure for Brighter Futures in Borneo

Our
campaign aims to provide essential infrastructure to support the education and
care of 2000 stateless children, primarily from the Bajau Laut (sea gypsies)
community, and other marginalized children in Borneo. By building a solid
foundation through infrastructure, we aspire to create an environment conducive
to learning and growth, offering these children the opportunity for a better
future.

“Education is the cornerstone of empowerment, opening doors to limitless possibilities.”

In Borneo, there are thousands of stateless children, particularly from the Bajau Laut community, who are deprived of access to formal education. They face numerous challenges, including food insecurity and susceptibility to substance abuse and exploitation. To address these pressing issues, Yayasan MATRI operates 11 charity schools across remote islands and urban areas in Borneo. Currently, we have 2000 children enrolled, but the demand far exceeds our capacity.

Our primary goal is to expand our reach by establishing more charity schools in additional communities and islands, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has access to quality education and care. Through the establishment of Pusat Pembangunan Minda Insan (PPMI), or Centers for Human Development, Yayasan MATRI endeavors to provide a holistic educational experience tailored to the needs of vulnerable groups, including stateless children in East Sabah.

The participation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like Yayasan MATRI is instrumental in complementing government efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) – Quality Education. Since our inception in 2011, we have successfully established 11 PPMIs, with plans for an additional 30 in response to high demand from local communities. Our ultimate ambition is to
establish 1,001 PPMIs across Sabah, contributing to the eradication of illiteracy and the reduction of school dropout rates among marginalized communities.

With your support, we can provide the necessary infrastructure, including classrooms, sanitation facilities, and learning materials, to enhance the educational experience for 2000 stateless children in Borneo. Together, let’s build a brighter future for these children, empowering them to unlock their full potential and become agents of positive change in their communities. Join us in our mission to ensure that no child is left behind in the pursuit of education and opportunity.
